Students Gain Critical Aid Through Trustee Scholarship

By Leah R. Eggers

(September 1, 2009) -- Now more than ever, scholarship support is critical to our students. A new scholarship fund established by several leadership volunteers advances the College's commitment to making a Simmons education more accessible to talented scholars.

Created by several Simmons trustees in support of the Making Education Work campaign, the Trustee Scholarship Fund provides valuable scholarship aid to students in good academic standing with demonstrated financial need. This six-figure endowed fund was created as part of a group effort to meet some of our students' most pressing needs.

"The trustees are always hearing that students are faced with difficult financial choices when choosing to attend Simmons," said Kathleen Morrissey LaPoint '84, a Simmons trustee. "Our goal was to work together to create this fund in support of students, and to inspire others to give to the Making Education Work campaign. Scholarships are a big part of 'making education work,' and it's a privilege to have helped create a fund that so tangibly and practically supports Simmons students and the College as a whole."

The Trustee Scholarship Fund enhances the College's ability to award scholarships each year, providing important resources for deserving students who have what it takes to succeed at the College. In addition, the fund increases the Simmons endowment and lowers the College's dependence on tuition.

"This fund is yet another example of our trustees' unwavering commitment to the College, and to current and future generations of Simmons students," said Kristina Gulick Schaefer, vice president of Advancement. "I'm inspired by our trustees' philanthropy, and it was a privilege to work with them on this important effort."

The Trustee Scholarship Fund exemplifies the transformative impact of campaign gifts from alumnae/i and friends. To support the Making Education Work campaign, make your gift today at www.simmons.edu/makingeducationwork.
