(November 5, 2009) -- The U.S. Department of State has announced that Simmons College Warburg Professor of Political Science and International Relations Thomas Hull has received a Presidential Meritorious Service Award, approved by President Barack Obama, for his accomplishments as U.S. ambassador to Sierra Leone from 2004 to 2007.

(November 2, 2009) -- African studies and anthropology expert Dr. Richard A. Lobban, Jr. will discuss the unresolved Darfur conflict and southern Sudan's upcoming referendum on possible independence during a lecture Nov. 12 at Simmons in Boston. The event, which takes place at 5:00 p.m. in the Linda K. Paresky Conference Center, 300 The Fenway, is free and open to the public.

(November 2, 2009) -- In the Simmons School of Management community, SOM (GSM) founding deans Anne Jardim and Margaret Hennig have had a truly incredible impact on many of our alumnae's careers and lives.

(November 1, 2009) -- I am very excited to announce that Simmons is embarking on its largest campaign in the history of the College. The Board of Trustees voted in October to endorse a goal of $85 million for the Making Education Work campaign, which will run until June 2014.

(October 30, 2009) -- Almost 150 alumnae/i, family, and friends returned to campus for Leadership Weekend October 23 and 24. The theme of the weekend was recognition and enrichment. Attendees were thanked, and some received special acknowledgment for their commitment to the college during Friday evening's dinner. Saturday's program featured updates about the College and volunteer information sessions.

(October 30, 2009) -- As a result of outreach by the Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations, Simmons has received a substantial gift of laboratory equipment from the DuPont Corporation.

(October 30, 2009) -- The Eliot Hotel, located in Boston's Back Bay neighborhood at the corner of Massachusetts and Commonwealth Avenues, recently was named the "Number 1 Small City Hotel in North America" by Travel and Leisure Magazine. The Eliot was also named number 19 in the top hotels, large or small, internationally.

(October 30, 2009) -- SOM Professor Sylvia Maxfield spoke on National Public Radio's October 20 Tell Me More program. Sylvia discussed the outrage over the recent bonuses given to Wall Street executives.

(October 30, 2009) -- Attorney General Martha Coakley announced recently that Barbara Lee '67, '01HD, president of the Barbara Lee Family Foundation, will co-chair Coakley's U.S. Senate campaign.

(October 6, 2009) -- The Simmons School of Management has been included in the 2010 edition of Princeton Review's 301 best business schools and is ranked #1 as the school with the greatest opportunities for women. The School was able to compete for this ranking this year because of its recent AACSB accreditation.

(September 23, 2009) -- The Simmons School of Management's entrepreneurship program has been named one of the 25 best programs in the nation by Entrepreneur magazine and The Princeton Review, which jointly surveyed more than 2,300 schools.

(September 18, 2009) -- The Simmons community mourns the passing of Dr. James Walsh yesterday. He was a much-respected member of the Education Department at Simmons.

(September 10, 2009) – Last month, the Colleges of the Fenway (COF) and The Consortium of Universities in Kyoto, Japan, signed a mutual agreement aimed at developing research and academic exchange opportunities between the two higher education collectives.

(September 3, 2009) -- There are some people who are determined to reach their goal in spite of what life puts in the way. Julie Tuttle, who grew up in Wilton, is a member of that group.

In 2002 she was seriously injured in a traffic accident during her senior year at Simmons College. She was told she could not recover enough to be a nurse, that she might not walk again.

(August 7, 2009) -- Simmons has been named by Forbes.com as one of "America's Best Colleges 2009." Simmons is among a select group of 600 colleges in the ranking, representing 15% of the nearly 4,000 colleges in the U.S. This is the second year in a row that Simmons College has appeared on this distinctive list.

(August 4, 2009) -- Gretchen P. Fox '87SM, founder and president of the transition management and facility services consultant giant Fox RPM, recently pledged $50,000 to name a breakout room on the fifth floor of the new School of Management and Academic Building.

(August 3, 2009) -- With crucial support from the Coleman Foundation and the Will J. Reid Foundation, the SOM will extend the opportunities offered through its nationally acclaimed Entrepreneurship Program into the undergraduate college, the non-business Simmons community, and to local community college entrepreneurship efforts.

(August 3, 2009) -- While other college students spent their summer vacation on faraway trips, jobs, and beach excursions, senior Asia Norton '10 is doing something a bit different: traveling to rural Liberia to install solar powered water purification systems. Norton's project was funded after a rigorous proposal process by a $10,000 grant from the Davis Projects for Peace, a national competition open to college students to design grassroots peace-building projects.

(August 3, 2009) -- Paulette Johnson '03 M.Ed., LSWA, a counselor for the agency Comprehensive School Age Parenting Program, Inc., was instrumental in garnering her agency a prominent, national distinction. CSAPP recently received the Community Partners Award from the National Association of School Nurses, an award that is bestowed on only one agency annually.

(July 31, 2009) -- Out of a remarkable convergence of African American Simmons figures from the '60s and '70s earlier this year, came a call-to-action that will support future generations of African American students, while at the same time honoring a woman who quietly enabled the success of some of the College's first students of color.

(July 30, 2009) -- Nancy O'Rourke '96HS was recently named a Fellow of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners at the Academy's annual conference in June. The AANP is the only full-service national professional membership organization for nurse practitioners of all specialties, and has over 125,000 members.

(July 1, 2009) -- I had lunch yesterday with two friends, one of whom is 92 years old and just back from her 70th college reunion. She was filled with feelings about what it had been like to be one of only four class members attending the reunion and with stories about living in a dorm after all these years. I joined in and said that I had recently attended my 40th reunion at Simmons. Then we both turned to our third friend, who like each of us, had attended a small women's college. We asked her if she had gone to her reunion and she said, "I never got into the reunion groove."

(June 1, 2009) -- While Dr. Esther Wilkins '38 and Dr. Hilde Tillman '45 missed each other at Simmons - one graduating before the other matriculated - they would come to share some remarkable similarities in their groundbreaking lives.

(June 1, 2009) - - Congratulations to this year's seniors, who achieved a 35% participation rate for their Senior Class Gift – the highest of any senior class gift campaign ever. The Simmons Alumnae Association had challenged the Class of 2009 to reach a giving rate of 30% participation, an ambitious goal the students not only met but definitively surpassed. Because of this achievement, the Alumnae Association Executive Board (AAEB) awarded the Senior Class Gift campaign $2,009.

(May 29, 2009) -- On May 14, nearly 250 alumnae/i and friends gathered to enjoy the annual Commencement Recognition Celebration. For the first time in its history, this evening of appreciation for members of the 1899 Society and the John Simmons Society was held at Simmons. Members of these giving societies include leadership donors of $1,000 and above and those who have included Simmons College in their estate planning.

(May 29, 2009) -- Respected journalist Gwen Ifill '77, '93HD encouraged Simmons College graduates to choose something meaningful in which to participate. "Do not shrink from life and do not shrink from choices," Ifill said. "The stakes are too high. And you are, after all, Simmons women."

(May 29, 2009) -- Earlier this year, SHS Dean Gerry Koocher and Associate Dean and Chair of Nursing Judy Beal accepted an invitation from Prince Sultan University (PSU) to visit Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. While there, the SHS signed a memorandum of understanding with PSU to develop a graduate program in maternal-child health nursing for Saudi women who have completed undergraduate science degrees in the Kingdom.

(May 28, 2009) -- In July, Courtney Young '97LS will begin her three-year term on the American Library Assocation (ALA) Executive Board, an elected distinction granted to only twelve members concurrently. She was one of two new members elected by the ALA Council in a vote taken at the 2009 ALA Midwinter Meeting held in Denver.

(May 28, 2009) -- Natalie Hill '09SW is one of five 2009 winners of the prestigious Judith Holm Memorial Award. Hill's award-winning paper is titled Helping Clients Navigate the Coming Out Process: A Person in Environment Approach.

(May 8, 2009) -- Some of you may have seen an article, "Colleges Flunk Economics Test as Harvard Model Destroys Budgets", on Bloomberg.com. The article focuses on the financial challenges facing higher education and includes references to Simmons, BU, and Harvard.

(May 5, 2009) -- Invoking images of her mother, father, sisters, and two adopted children, actress Diane Keaton spoke about the importance of the ordinary to a crowd of more than 1,500 at the 30th annual Simmons School of Management Leadership Conference, "Vision to Voice: Leadership in the Global Age" on May 2, 2009.

(May 5, 2009) -- When it comes to making a difference in world issues, former President of Ireland Mary Robinson, said it's less important to be first and more important to reach a critical mass. Downplaying her breakthrough role as the first woman president of her country, during remarks at the 30th annual SOM Leadership Conference Robinson explained that only when they reach sufficient numbers will women be able to affect change.

(May 5, 2009) -- Contrary to popular economic sentiment, the "Bear" market has never been better, at least for Maxine Clark ─ founder, chair and chief executive officer of Build-a-Bear Workshop, Inc. ─ and opening keynote speaker at this year's SOM Leadership Conference. In fact, Clark is one of the happy few enjoying a rather bullish market these days in the somewhat sluggish world of retail.

(May 5, 2009) -- "There has never been a time like this," said Charlayne Hunter-Gault, a 40-year veteran news reporter, firsthand observer to signature events in the black community, and a keynote speaker at this year's SOM Leadership Conference.

(May 5, 2009) -- In protective security since the publication of her bestselling book Infidel fueled death threats, a quiet and slender Ayaan Hirsi Ali spoke eloquently about her journey to a standing-room-only crowd at the 30th annual SOM Leadership Conference.

(April 30, 2009) -- This week, Simmons College received Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council for its School of Management and Academic Building. The building, which opened in January, is Simmons's first structure built in accordance with the rigorous standards set by the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system.

(April 30, 2009) -- Judy Bornstein '96SM recently committed $25,000 to support the SOM Executive-in-Residence (EIR) program, giving back to the institution that provided her with an education she calls "transformative."

Unspeakable is an award-winning film that examines her family both as a unit and as individuals, and also delves into issues of the archetypal 1950s American nuclear family.

(April 28, 2009) -- Chitra Staley '82SM was recently named a top 10 financial advisor by Women's Business Boston. Staley was nominated by readers of the publication both for her outstanding financial planning acumen and her ability to communicate with clients.

(April 24, 2009) -- A $300,000 bequest from a longtime Simmons supporter will enhance the Dean's New Initiatives Fund for the College of Arts and Sciences as well as the Simmons College Alumnae Scholarship Fund.

(April 24, 2009) -- U.S. News & World Report rankings for Library and Information Studies (LIS) programs were just released. LIS programs are only ranked every three years. Simmons Graduate School of Library and Information Science moved to number 10 from number 13 in 2006.

(April 22, 2009) -- Professor Rich Gurney has been instrumental in bringing green chemistry to campus during the last four years, and his students have taken his crusade to both national and international audiences. Professor Sue Stafford has been teaching philosophy at Simmons for the past 18 years. In addition to being a dedicated teacher, she's also an avid sailor, a pilot, and a gardener. She says her interests have always revolved around the environment: "I live in it, fly in it, sail in it, garden in it, and am concerned about sustaining it."

(April 22, 2009) -- April 22, 1970 – the first Earth Day observed in the United States. It launched the beginning of the modern environmental movement in America and it thrust the environment onto the national agenda. It led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and to the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species acts.

(April 16, 2009) -- The family of former Graduate School of Library and Information Science Professor Allen Smith has made a $1 million gift from his estate to pay tribute to Dr. Smith's 30-year Simmons career.
