Planned Gifts

Planned gifts, like your gifts to The Simmons Fund, are a key part of the life of the College. In fact, the College was founded by a planned gift from the estate of John Simmons. Nearly one-third of the gifts received during the $69.3 million Campaign for Simmons (2000-2004) came from planned gifts, created by generous people from all walks of life.

We call them "planned gifts" because they take extra time and care to create. Often, they are arranged during our lifetime - for example, in a will - and completed when we have passed away. Certain types of planned gifts can help you create income and significant tax benefits for you or your loved ones. But planned gifts are not only about the future. As many who have made a planned gift for Simmons will tell you, they are also about our hopes and dreams today.

Below is a summary of the most common types of planned gifts. For information tailored to your unique needs and goals, contact the Office of Advancement at 800-831-4284. We are happy to be of service to you, and your advisors. Your conversations will place you under no obligation, and will remain confidential. We look forward to hearing from you.

Giving by Bequest
If you have a will, or plan to create one, consider including a gift for Simmons along with gifts to the family, friends and causes that matter most to you. Bequests are easily created, fully revocable, and can be crafted to meet your needs and goals. Additionally, if you are 70 or older and willing to sign a Letter of Intent and provide a copy of your plans, Simmons may be able to include a portion of your bequest intention in fundraising totals. Please contact us for more details.

Giving through a Charitable Gift Annuity
A charitable gift annuity is a simple contract between you and Simmons College. In exchange for your gift of $10,000 or more, Simmons agrees to pay you a fixed annual amount, based on your age, for the rest of your life. The amount remaining will go to Simmons College. Payments can begin immediately, or you can defer payments to a date of your choosing and receive a higher rate. You may be able to take a charitable income tax deduction for a portion of your gift, and some of the annuity income you receive may be tax-free. Gift annuities can be a wonderful way to turn low-yielding, appreciated stocks into a steady stream of income.

Giving Through a Retirement Plan, or Life Insurance Policy
New legislation has extended the rollover for 2012: If you are age 70 1/2; or older, you can support Simmons with a tax-savvy gift directly from your IRA.

You can also designate Simmons as a charitable beneficiary of your retirement plan, 401(k), pension or life insurance policy. This gift is also easy to arrange, and revocable. It might also help you meet charitable goals while saving less heavily taxed assets for your heirs. Contact the Office of Planned Giving for more information.

Charitable Remainder Trusts
Like a charitable gift annuity, a charitable remainder trust can help you create a gift today, establish income for one or more individuals (either fixed or variable) and enjoy significant tax benefits. Trusts are generally appropriate for gifts of $100,000 or more because of the time needed to create and administer each one. Every trust is governed by its own trust document which is created by Simmons College in partnership with you and your legal and financial advisors. Contact the Office of Planned Giving if you would like to learn more about the benefits of a charitable remainder trust.
