Become an Admissions Volunteer

Alumnae/i can play a key role in encouraging qualified students to attend the undergraduate program at Simmons College. Following are alumnae/i volunteer opportunities offered through the Office of Undergraduate Admission.

1. Represent Simmons at a local college fair
Staffing college fairs is a fun, non-time-consuming way to significantly help Simmons. It’s also enjoyable to interact with the next generation of college students. This is a volunteer opportunity for alumnae/i of all ages. Volunteers receive all the training and materials they need, as well as ongoing communication about student recruitment efforts and college fair representation.

2. Refer students to Simmons
The world needs more people from Simmons! Any alumna/us can submit referrals to Kathy Porteus by sending the student’s full name, mail and email address, and her high school’s name and graduation year. Please indicate if the student is a relation. Alumnae/i can also encourage students to visit the Simmons website at www.simmons.edu to request an admissions kit. The website offers convenient online application options, links to academic departments and faculty, plus online registration to campus admission events.

3. Greeting card mailing project — early January
Assist recruitment efforts by writing and sending New Year’s greeting cards to student applicants. This is a great project for volunteers of any age and geographic location. Once registered, participating alumnae/i receive — in late December — envelopes and cards with a pre-printed message to be personalized. The cards are sent by alumnae/i to a list of no more than 25 students in each alumna/us geographical area, if possible. The cards will need to be mailed during the first week of January, and the donation of postage by alumnae/i is appreciated.

4. Annual yield mailing — writing cards in February/March
Alumnae/i admission representatives who graduated from Simmons in the past 10 years are asked each year to write to admitted students. Alumnae/i volunteers are matched to students according to major when possible. Note cards, envelopes, and Simmons pens are provided, along with the address and interest information for each student.

5. Refer a high school in your area
Simmons continually updates its database of high schools to which admissions materials should be sent. As Simmons actively pursues its goal to increase diversity at the College, alumnae/i referrals to high schools and communities that have strong college preparation curricula plus a significant percentage of students of color are appreciated. Alumnae/i may send the name of the high school, its location (city, state, or country, if outside the U.S.), and a brief description of the school.
