Simmons Launches Online Master's Degree for Nurse Practitioners

(May 7, 2013) -- Nursing@Simmons, a newly launched online master's degree program for aspiring family nurse practitioners, will enable Simmons to deliver our first-rate Master of Science in Nursing program to students across the country, expanding our reach and visibility. This program, an important part of Strategy 2015, will match the rigor of the on-campus learning experience through a combination of live face-to-face online instruction, self-paced course work, small classes, and a top-notch clinical field program.

Sarah Volkman Participated in World Malaria Day Panel on Capitol Hill

(May 6, 2013) -- To commemorate World Malaria Day on April 25, the U.S. Senate Caucus on Malaria and Neglected Tropical Diseases invited guests to join them for a panel discussion "Invest in the Future: Defeat Malaria," on Capitol Hill. Dr. Sarah Volkman, professor of nursing, was a featured speaker, discussing the importance of U.S. partnerships in the fight against malaria, and the return those investments yield for the U.S. and the world.

Kathryn Mead '13 Shares International Nursing Experiences in Huffington Post

The experience helped to pave her path toward becoming a registered nurse immersed in advocacy for women and children, and equitable health care for all human beings. (February 20, 2013) -- The levels of bisphenol A (BPA) in the urine of premature infants in the neonatal intensive care unit is associated with greater exposure to medical devices, but not with nutritional intake, according to a study published online Feb. 18 in Pediatrics.

Simmons Nursing Students Learn from Alumnae on the Job

(January 10, 2013) -- "The students are definitely adding an extra dimension to the lives – and the health – of seniors living in this community."

That's how Adele Pike, clinical instructor at the Simmons School of Nursing and Health Sciences, assessed the impact of the six Simmons nursing students she taught during their fall-semester clinical in community health nursing at Springhouse, a senior living community in Jamaica Plain, MA. The community includes a facility for seniors requiring "memory care," and each Simmons student was paired with a resident throughout the semester.

(July 13, 2012) -- Nutrition Professor Teresa Fung has been appointed associate editor of the epidemiology section of the Journal of Nutrition. Her 18-month term began July 1. Fung will have a major role in manuscript editorial decisions, including acceptance and rejection of manuscripts. The Journal of Nutrition is ranked the third most prominent nutrition journal in the United States by Impact Factor, which ranks journals by how often papers were cited in other research papers.

(May 9, 2012) -- The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) and the American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) are pleased to announce the creation of a new online resource developed to advance robust academic-practice partnerships. This new clearinghouse, hosted on the AACN Web site, features an interactive tool kit with practical guidelines for establishing successful collaborations as well as a Guiding Principles document that outlines the eight tenets for productive partnerships.

Approved by the AACN Board of Directors in March 2010, a joint task force was convened by AACN and AONE to develop resources for nursing leaders looking to develop and sustain effective academic--practice partnerships. This task force was led jointly by AACN Board Member Judy Beal, DNSc, RN, from Simmons College and past AONE President Linda Everett, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN from Indiana University Health.

(March 5, 2012) -- The formal investiture of Judy A. Beal as the inaugural Dean of the School of Nursing and Health Sciences took place on Friday, February 24. Prior to the investiture ceremony, Dean Beal led an academic symposium: Preparing the Future Leaders of Healthcare through Inter-professional Collaboration and Teamwork.

Prior to her appointment as dean last May, Dr. Beal had served as interim dean of the School since last year. She has been at Simmons for nearly 30 years, and during that time has helped to build the nursing program into one of the largest and most well known academic programs at Simmons.

Nutrition Students Design "Eating Well on a Tight Budget" Diet Program for Martha's Vineyard Seniors

(February 17, 2012) -- The community room at Woodside Village of Island Elderly Housing was filled with aromas of spices and fresh vegetables Friday morning while some 15 neighbors chatted, swapping recipes and cooking tips. Not just a friendly luncheon, the gathering was a program called "Eating Well on a Tight Budget" designed by two Simmons College Nutrition students to help seniors make wise food choices.

Masters candidates Betsy Corsiglia of Oak Bluffs and Jen Stallings of Marshfield developed the workshop as a research project about seniors' eating habits and effective ways to improve their nutrition. The researchers developed the model as a thesis project for a class taught by Nancie Herbold, chairman of the nutrition department. They worked closely with their advisor, nutrition professor Theresa Fung, Sc.D., R.D., L.D.N.

Simmons Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Students Recognized Nationally

(November 3, 2011) -- Two third-year Simmons DPT students, Samantha Letizio '13HS and Andrew Oliver '12HS, were elected to National Student Assembly positions at the organization’s annual Student Conclave in Minneapolis, Minnesota on October 22, 2011. There were only nine positions to be filled nationally and each position had three very qualified candidates. Letizio was elected as a Director and Oliver was elected the National Delegate. This is an exceptional accomplishment considering there are 213 physical therapy (PT) and 276 physical therapy assistant (PTA) programs in the United States. It is unusual that two students are elected from the same state, but two students elected from the same program is exceptional.

Simmons Dotson Bridge and Mentoring Program Scholars at the Mattapan Community Health Center Health Care Revival 15

(September 19, 2011) -- The Mattapan Community Health Center Health Care Revival 15 kicked off Saturday September 10, 2011. The health fair offered something for the mind, body, and soul. Seventeen Simmons Dotson Bridge and Mentoring program Scholars and three faculty participated in all activities and screenings offered at the health fair. The Scholars assisted with peripheral vascular screenings, eye exams, and hearing test. The scholars also assisted with health education in the children's and teen's tent, which included the importance of physical education and nutrition. Other areas the Dotson Scholars were particularly invaluable was health education using interpretation services. Many of the residents have English as a second language and the scholars were able to communicate effectively with these residents in their native language.

(April 21, 2011) -- Dr. Christian T. Chenard '96 graduated from the Simmons/University of New England Westbrook Nursing (MSN) Program. His life's work focused on caring for the most vulnerable populations—homeless HIV/AIDS patients, substance abusers, and patients with mental illness. Chris died of pancreatic cancer in 2007. In 2009, the Simmons Department of Nursing established an award in his honor and memory. On April 13, 2011 the second annual Christian T. Chenard Award for Humanitarianism was presented to Patricia Thompson Leavitt, MSN, FNP.

(June 29, 2010) -- The Simmons Nursing program announced that it is one of 63 schools nationwide that will receive funding to award 12 scholarships from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) through the RWJF New Careers in Nursing Scholarship Program (NCIN). Scholarships provided through this competitive program will be given to students traditionally underrepresented in the field of nursing.

PT Student Wins Prestigious National Award

(January 5, 2010) -- For the eighth time in 10 years, a Simmons College student has received the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA)'s prestigious Ruth P. Hall Clinical Fellowship Award. This year's award, which is given annually to one physical therapy student in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, was presented to Hannah Ribeck '08, '10HS at the annual Massachusetts chapter meeting in November.

(May 29, 2009) -- Earlier this year, SHS Dean Gerry Koocher and Associate Dean and Chair of Nursing Judy Beal accepted an invitation from Prince Sultan University (PSU) to visit Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. While there, the SHS signed a memorandum of understanding with PSU to develop a graduate program in maternal-child health nursing for Saudi women who have completed undergraduate science degrees in the Kingdom.
