SOM Professor Joins U.S. National Women's Business Council
8/26/2014

(August 26, 2014) -- Teresa Nelson Ph.D., Professor and Director of the Entrepreneurship Program at the Simmons School of Management, has recently been invited to join the prestigious National Women's Business Council (NWBC). Her 3-year term is effective immediately. The NWBC is a non-partisan federal advisory council created to serve as an independent source of advice and counsel to the President, Congress, and the U.S. Small Business Administration on economic issues of importance to women business owners.

Myrlie Evers-Williams '78EE, '01HD to Deliver Invocation at Inauguration

(January 8, 2013) -- President Obama has chosen civil rights activist and author Myrlie Evers-Williams, widow of slain civil rights icon Medgar Evers, to deliver the invocation at his public swearing-in on Martin Luther King Day, January 21. This is the first time a woman and a layperson has been selected to deliver this public prayer. Evers-Williams is a former chair of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). She is an alumna of a Simmons School of Management executive education program, and Simmons awarded her an honorary degree in 2001.

Mass General Heart Center Is Named for E. Gerald Corrigan and Dean Cathy Minehan

(August 2, 2012) -- The commitment to Massachusetts General Hospital shown by E. Gerald Corrigan, PhD, and Cathy Minehan is well known. Cathy has been chair of the hospital's Board of Trustees since mid 2008, and five years ago, Jerry made a gift that both named the cardiac intensive care unit and established the Elizabeth Anne and Karen Barlow Corrigan Women's Heart Health Program.

The couple recently made an extraordinary $20 million gift that supports innovation and research in the Women's Heart Health Program and throughout the MGH Heart Center. In recognition of this, Mass General leadership has named the MGH Heart Center after Jerry and Cathy. Going forward, it will be known as the Corrigan Minehan Heart Center.

3 Ways to Improve Women's Networks in Organizations, Survey from the Simmons College Women's Leadership Initiative

(June 22, 2012) -- The Simmons students in the Masters in Communications Management program recently launched the inaugural issue of their new Management magazine. One of the issues they tackle is the effectiveness of women's networks within organizations. Some of the findings are not surprising, like the fact that women who are active in their organizations find them effective. But the authors of the article (aptly named "Panacea or Placebo"), Patricia Deyton and Deborah Marlino, have some useful conclusions on how to make women's networks more effective for all women in the company.

(March 5, 2012) -- The Simmons School of Management played an important role in the first-ever National Conference on Girls' Education, which was held in Washington, D.C., February 10-12. The event attracted more than 400 educators, consultants, and others representing over 25 states and six countries including the United States, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, South Africa, and India. All came together to advance the field of educating girls globally. Simmons's support for the conference included participating on the advisory board. (December 13, 2011) -- On Tuesday, September 27, Simmons School of Management alumnae, faculty and staff, Center for Gender and Organization affiliates, as well as SOMAA friends gathered in the Executive Education Conference Room in the SOM building for the Fall 2011 SOMAA Speaker Series event. In an effort to support SOM alumnae in their desire for life-long learning, the SOMAA has traditionally hosted two Speaker Series events per year. These events offer a unique opportunity for alumnae to reconnect and to engage in discussion with one another on a topic of interest. (October 27, 2011) -- The United Nations Association of Greater Boston has included the School of Management in the inaugural Global Corporate Citizenship Honor Roll.

The SOM is a Massachusetts signatory of the UN Global Compact and Principles of Responsible Management Education. The SOM will be honored at a special event Oct. 28 that will recognize the schools that have this designation.

(August 18, 2011) -- The Patrick-Murray Administration announced the appointment of Josiane Martinez as Executive Director of the Office for Refugees and Immigrants (ORI), effective Monday, August 22. Martinez succeeds Richard Chacón, who left state service in July for a position at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Fall 2011 Elective Course Opportunity for SOM Alumnae – GSM 503 Venture Capital - Supply Side of Entrepreneurship

(July 1, 2011) -- The Venture Capital course is designed to provide an understanding of the venture capital industry, the structure and operations of a venture capital firm, and the relationships between venture capitalists ("VCs"), their investors, their portfolio companies and entrepreneurs [and VCs and their investors]. Both Jeanne and Rick expect to generate heightened interest among the class to explore venture capital as a career by using venture investment simulation decisions made as part of the class participation. For the more entrepreneurial-minded class members the class will increase their understanding of the VC's mindset and reasoning for some of the type of actions taken by VCs during the investment process and portfolio company development which at times puts a strain on the dynamic of those relationships.

(May 20, 2011) -- Patricia Deyton, Director of the Center for Gender in Organizations, and former Executive Director of the Council of World Women Leaders, has been invited by the government of Lithuania to participate in a seminar entitled "Women Enhancing Democracy (WED)" on June 30, 2011. This seminar will take place on the margins of the Community of Democracies Ministerial. It is also hoped that Secretary Clinton will be participating in the seminar.

Summer 2011 Elective Course Opportunity for Alumnae – GSM 516: Sustainability Analysis and Evaluation

(April 7, 2011) -- The School of Management has announced a new format summer course called Sustainability Analysis and Evaluation. This is a self-paced online course with virtual and face-to-face options. The course has three modules. The first covers "green GDP" and the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) framework for triple bottom line accounting. The second covers how to calculate social return on investment - this can apply to for-profit and non-profit organizations. The third covers how to calculate the financial return to an organization of its social responsibility activities.

(January 8, 2010) -- MGMT 516 Sustainability Analysis & Reporting is a two-credit, MBA elective course being taught by Professor Sylvia Maxfield in a hybrid format (only 5 face-to-face meetings) in the Spring 2010 semester on Thursday evenings from 6:00-9:00 p.m. from January 21 - May 8. The course is currently open to all SOM alumnae at a 50%-discounted rate of $1,135.

Sustainable Business School Design in Boston (Design Top News)

(December 15, 2009) -- The Simmons' School of Management by Cannon Design in Boston, United States, provided the opportunity to convert a former barren parking lot into a student-centered place for thriving campus life. Specifically, the project included the design of a 66,500 sq. ft. academic center and creation of a new green space, the Simmons Quadrangle, which was the former parking lot.
